ΗΡΟΔΟΤΟΣ (484 - 410 π.Χ.)Ο Ηρόδοτος θεωρείται ως ο `πατέρας της ιστορίας` και ένας από τους μεγαλύτερους και οξυδερκέστερους ιστορικούς ολόκληρου του κόσμου. Γεννήθηκε στην Αλικαρνασσό της Ιωνίας και πέθανε στην Ιταλική πόλη Θούριοι, που ήταν τότε αποικία των Αθηναίων, σε ηλικία 74 ετών. Το 445 π.Χ. ήλθε στην Αθήνα, όπου γνώρισε τον Περικλή και με τη συνδρομή του, διάβασε δημόσια την ιστορία του, παίρνοντας ? κατά μια παράδοση ? γι` αυτό σαν αμοιβή του δέκα τάλαντα. Ήταν γόνος πλούσιας και διακεκριμένης οικογένειας, απ` τις πιο καλές του τόπου του. Διέθετε μεγάλη περιέργεια και παρατηρητικότητα, λεπτό καλλιεργημένο πνεύμα, διεισδυτικότητα και πλήρη αμεροληψία στις ιστορικές του κρίσεις. Η ιστορία του Ηροδότου διαιρείται σε 9 βιβλία, που το καθένα έχει σα τίτλο του το όνομα μιας από τις εννέα μούσες των αρχαίων. Ταξίδεψε πάρα πολύ ανά τον κόσμο, βλέποντας και παρατηρώντας τους ανθρώπους και τα διάφορα πολιτικοκοινωνικά φαινόμενα της εποχής του. Γι` αυτό δε και υποστηρίζεται από πολλούς ότι υπήρξε συνάμα ο πρώτος δημοσιογράφος του κόσμου. Παράλληλα θεωρείται και ως ο ιδρυτής της γεωγραφίας. Επίσης ως ένας από τους πιο μεγάλου αρχαίους περιηγητές.
